Why Is Goal Setting Important?

Perhaps some of you have seen or read about Jet Blue Flight Attendant Steven Slater, who lost it on a passenger, and quit his job in a rather unique fashion. He had a bit of a "meltdown" with a passenger and stormed off the plane.

In some circles he has been described as a hero.

Different surveys I have seen since that episode report that 80-90% of employees would love to quit their jobs in dramatic fashion.

To tell their co workers and bosses what they really feel and walk out.

Interesting.

What does any of this have to do with "why is goal setting important"?

Well if so many people are that unhappy with their jobs, why are they doing them?

To live of course. To pay the bills.

But why do something that you do not enjoy? That you dread going to everyday.

Is that any way to live? Is it really living at all?

Why not do something that you enjoy and get paid to do it?

Is that even possible? I think it is.

But you have to believe in it.

Once upon a time you had desires, dreams and maybe a passion for something. But for one reason or another
you never thought of, or were never encouraged, to pursue that passion as a career.

Why not?

Maybe it is gardening. Maybe old cars or bird watching. It does not matter.

I watched a piece on CBS  Sunday Morning about the man who designs all the world famous fountains like the one outside the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.

And the Fountain of Dubai.

This guy built his first fountain when he was 9 years old. Now he has a multimillion dollar company.

And he is doing what he loves.

You have to rediscover that passion that is in you.

And you do have to set goals and then take action to make those goals a reality.

This is what successful people do.

Maybe you feel like you are stuck. I get that.

But you have to start somewhere.

You can find some goal setting worksheets that will walk you through the process if need be.

What do you love to do? What are you passionate about?

Whatever it is, there are probably others out there that share your passion who have made a career or business out of it. Find them and see if you could do the same.

I substitute teach. A goal of mine is to get more substitute teaching days this year. So I am going to email and visit principals and schools so that they will know I exist. I will do this on a weekly basis.

I have a small lawn care business which I really enjoy. My goal is to obtain more clients. To make this happen I am going to go door to door this week with some business cards. I am getting at least one new client this week.

Why is goal setting important?

To help you realize what you are meant to do and to help you do it.
